Strong collection statements, matured concepts with sophisticated content as well as a pronounced awareness for sustainable product and process solutions were centre stage at MUNICH FABRIC START from 29 to 31 January 2019. The most recent event made it clear how important an operational and perfectly equipped business platform is in view of current market challenges. The possibilities for direct exchange and in-depth networking were used more than ever.

There was a “great need to talk” both on the part of the over 1,000 exhibitors and on the part of the designers and buyers from leading international brands. After three busy days the latest MUNICH FABRIC START drew to a close with the first ever 3% decrease in visitor attendance against the previous year’s event in January 2018. Despite the current tight, in part explosive market situation 19,800 international trade visitors in total travelled from German-speaking and European countries to Munich. The percentage of visitors from European countries remained unchanged at 38%. Strikingly positive, however, was the atmosphere on site: for the whole duration of the trade fair an optimistic and hopeful anticipation of the WHAT IS LOVE Summer 2020 could be felt.

The current MUNICH FARBIC START has flagged up the strongly symbiotic relationship between fashion and technology. It has shown that new thinking is required for many processes and that it is no longer sufficient to think of fashion in terms of the finished product but rather from the start of the process – beginning with raw material production.

Many conversations revolve around which textile innovations can be incorporated into the collections. The upmarket business atmosphere here in Munich promotes the necessary depth of conversations. Besides the all-encompassing theme of sustainability, technology and digitalisation were also predominant subjects for discussion – both at the stands and in the discussions and round tables with high-calibre panellists at the KEYHOUSE FORUM as well as in the DENIM DOCK at BLUEZONE.

Orientation, in-depth information and concrete possible applications are also the central theme in the ReSource Area. In this zone newly designed two seasons ago sustainable textile solutions are categorised and presented by product themes from organic, regenerative raw materials to recycled products and textile innovations. The interest in the ranges and lectures presented in the ReSource Area is rising constantly and even the big, well-known brands have started sourcing here now.

One of the highlights was the talk by Rolf Heimann, CEO of Hessnatur Stiftung and definitely one of the pioneers in view of sustainable and ecological apparel, delivered on the theme of Applied Sustainability – compliance with forthcoming requirements.

Also attracting a great deal of attention was the SUSTAINABLE INNOVATIONS Forum at KEYHOUSE. Commenting on this Simon Angel, the curator of Sustainable Innovations, said that this Forum had succeeded in making an open-minded and highly interested audience curious about, and inspired by, novel, sustainable materials and alternative processes; making them stop and take some time out in this atmospherically designed area.

Another focal theme at KEYHOUSE, the Innovation Think Tank of MUNICH FABRIC START, was the presentation of the HIGH TEX AWARD. The winner of this year’s innovation award was Becker Tuche, Aachen. The runner up was Soorty Enterprises and in third place came Mectex by Manifatture Italiane Scudieri. Recycling, sustainability, circularity – terms and themes that have already become integral parts of the collections displayed by many BLUEZONE exhibitors – show just how much the denim industry of all sectors is now also focusing on sustainability. The industry is being put through an acid test – not only because of rising public awareness about the environmental impact of apparel producers. Digitalisation also puts pressure on previously proven business models to change. Against this backdrop technology innovations and sustainability were also discussed in the talks at the DENIM DOCK.

In Munich BLUEZONE has emerged as a forum that mirrors the entire supply chain ever more clearly and in more detail. This includes new technologies and process solutions; creativity all the way down to end users and, of course, all the information related to innovative, resource-saving materials as impressively pooled at the KEYHOUSE.

The strategic orientation of MUNICH FABRIC START as an initiator and motivator as well as the aspirational structure of suppliers in a wide variety of segments such as fabrics, trims, denim & sportswear make up the nut and bolts so vital to the industry and for successful business.

Designers, product managers and buyers of renowned brands and labels were not only involved in in-depth discussions but also on a quest for new materials, innovations and fashion impulses such as updated colour schemes and patterns. Even though florals are still current there is an increased change of direction visible towards re-visited graphics and Art Decoinspirations.

Li Edelkoort provided a preview of tomorrow’s fashion, the look & feel in her Trend Seminar on Spring.Summer 2020. For the first time she also presented her Colour Card for Autumn.Winter 20/21, thereby positioning a colour range that builds on 30 different brown shades complemented by selected colour accents.

The appeal and market potential of athleisure and performance fashion and their increasing importance in future were addressed by David Shah, Publisher & CEO of View Publications, in his typical, passionate way.

Munich, 30th January 2019 – The winner of this year’s Innovation Award presented by MUNICH FABRIC START is Becker Tuche from Aachen. The company received the award for a new product development combining wool and Cordura with spandex – super lightweight and highly functional. By Becker Tuche’s account, the woven fabric features high abrasion resistance despite its low weight as well as very high water vapour permeability. Preferred areas of application are light outdoor styles as well as streetwear and corporate fashion.

"I am very pleased with this Award. For more than a year now we at Becker Tuche have looked into mixing various clothing segments from fashion, sportswear/outdoor, Corporate Fashion and workwear. Against this background the Wool Performance series combines classic wovens in wool and wool blends with such functions as wind breaking and waterproofing well-known from sportswear. The result is an individually coordinated quality portfolio fit for many applications. In response to the strong interest we are currently developing other fabrics made of wool/Cordura with technical functions."

The runner-up was Soorty Enterprises winning the 2nd place with an extremely lightweight, recycled and water-repellent denim in a Tencel/nylon blend. ‘Rain Shield’ convinced the jury with its elegant look in addition to numerous properties such as fast-drying finish, water-repellence, thermal insulation and shape retention. Furthermore, the denim boasts a super soft hand and is finished with a discreet shine

The product lifecycle starts with a design and its optimisation. This is how we develop products that “sound out” the limits of responsibility and benefits. ‘Rain Shield’ is characterised by a GOTS-certified surface treatment and bears the Bluesign seal thereby complying with the strict ecological and toxicological requirements. Rain Shield is a combination of Tencel and Repreve, recycled from post-industrial waste."

With ‘Hyperlight 3Layer’ and the associated continuous development of innovations and functional materials Mectex by Manifatture Italiane Scudieri came in third. The Italians are known for their high-tech developments in the sports and outerwear segment and come up with new ways and solutions for fusing comfort and function time and again. As is the case with a reflective, heat insulating fabric that glows in the dark or an ultra lightweight material with a graphene membrane that is both water-repellent, antimicrobial and breathable.

The international textile and fashion industry kicks off the 2020 Spring.Summer season in Munich. More than 1,000 fabrics, additionals, denim & sportswear suppliers exhibit their latest product and trend developments in 1,800 collections from 29 to 31 January 2019 at the MOC Munich and in the Zenith Area.

More than 1,000 fabrics, additionals, denim & sportswear suppliers exhibit their latest product and trend developments in 1,800 collections from 29 to 31 January 2019 at the MOC Munich and in the Zenith Area.

They are complemented by a growing number of service and sourcing providers as well as young brands and start-ups that present their philosophies and the ideology of forward-looking process solutions as well as solutions for resource-saving material sourcing and their areas of application.

This dynamic and mutually inspiring exhibitor structure brings about one of the most important international trade fair platforms for sourcing materials and in-depth networking and, hence, for linking fashion with technology with a view to shaping the future.

In terms of trend concepts for 2020 this future is characterised by emotionality, empathy and community. This is expressed by WHAT IS LOVE as a source of inspiration – passionate, playful, pragmatic. Unadulterated creativity comes care of the atmospherically designed DESIGN STUDIOS on the First Floor of Hall 3. In this spacious atelier setting renowned European design studios and trend offices will exhibit their latest prints, patterns and designs for Spring.Summer 20.

With its SOURCING area in Atrium 3 of Hall 3 MUNICH FABRIC START caters to the increasing demand for operational closed production cycles. The spectrum of services offered here by the internationally established manufacturing companies includes not only Cut-Make-Trim (CMT) solutions and high-end solutions but also comprehensive services like A-Z process solutions including sourcing processes.

Juan Carlos Gordillo designed the Rehab collection around TENCEL™ and TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ branded lyocell fabrics from Tejidos Royo. The fabrics were dyed using Recycrom technology from Officina+39 and the resultant garments finished by Tonello. The aim of Planet REhab collection is to illustrate that fashion can be both responsible and beautiful given the right supply chain partnerships. Convince yourself at KEYHOUSE H5 / 33.

With this statement BLUEZONE kicks off 2019 and with B.L.U.E.C.H.A.I.N 4.0 gives a clear signal for more transparency, resource-saving process solutions and conscious consumption. With its Ready Made Solutions RMS the BLUEZONE caters to an increasingly important demand for manufacturing and sourcing. Relevant lines will be exhibited by SC Ready Garment Technology, Lotus Garments, Denim Authority, and Pagada, to name but a few vendors.

Other highlights include the ‘FUTURISTIC CUSTOMIZATION GALLERY‘, a joint project by denim specialists MYR from Italy and Fimatex, as well as the presentation of the Capsule Collection developed by PG Denim in cooperation with Jonathan Christopher, the Denim Award winner 2018. Artist Anna Weber, @artworks.and.denim will present her very personal ‘Denim Art Exhibition‘.

Seminare, Workshops and Talks on the latest developments in the denim industry, about consumer needs, Blockchain, sustainability and techno denim all feature on the agenda of the DENIM DOCK in Hall 7.

The idea and concept of New Heritage, the Festival for All Things Timeless, will be introduced by the masterminds of the event at the New Heritage living room staged at the Reception Lodge of the BLUEZONE outdoor premises. Furthermore, denim experts and influencers will inform visitors about perspectives and their interpretations of current denim innovations.

Following intense networking and jointly realised projects we bring together what belongs
together: MUNICH FABRIC START Exhibitions GmbH now takes a share in New Heritage –
the Festival for Timeless Fashion – held once a year in Munich and Düsseldorf since 2017.
The organisers of the trade fairs are now complementing each other to continue the
successful course already charted.

Both events enjoy a growing community despite the general trends towards “trade-fair tiredness”.
New Heritage has become an established event for all those on a quest for quality and
authenticity off the beaten track. Craftsmanship, quality and durability are values also considered
core by the organisers of both MUNICH FABRIC START and BLUEZONE, and enjoy
growing popularity.

With this step the two organisers generate potential, pool their competence and make
efficient use of both synergies and resources to develop further and expand the up-andcoming
event for handcrafted, small-series products.

New Heritage has become an established event for all those on a quest for quality and
authenticity, for brands and products off the beaten track and a new kind of customer
experience – both B2C and B2B. This area holds great further expansion potential with
additional existing exhibitors, cooperation partners and accompanying side events.

The cooperation provides an outlook on the consistent further development of today’s trade
fair and shopping concepts. The overlap of B-2-B and B-2-C events holds great potential for
a model of the future without altering the core values of the event.

About New Heritage
New Heritage is a festival dedicated to high-quality products and the stories behind them. On
one weekend some 120 exhibitors from the segments of apparel, leisure,  ner living and foods
are presented at the event where they sell their products to end users as well as retailers. Exhibitors
include global players such as BMW Motorrad, Schiesser Revival and Manufactum, but also
small, national and international ateliers. The festival is rounded off by a versatile programme of
accompanying events comprising various workshops and lectures, music and heritage culture
galore. New Heritage is held once a year in Munich and in Düsseldorf and attracts approx.
5,000 visitors to each event.
